Finally, proof for the 5K mile oil change, or something to laugh at/BITOG fodder

Cant go wrong with 5k OCI changes without doing oil analysis. It covers severe driving conditions with excessive idling and short trips. Its s good rule to follow for general public.

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

Which one? I like Mexican version for my car.

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

Ok, let time be the judge (10-15yrs from now). does any of that mean you should not use 5w-30 instead?

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

agreed. If it was the case, we would have seen by now a technical paper from Honda that they came up with a ground breaking design that allows engines to run reliably with high fuel dilution while the rest of the industry considers its abnormal and cause for excessive wear. Honda knows about...

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

Depends on the engine, for example big difference between DI Camry and Honda turbo DI in the amount of fuel it produces (over 5%+ on many UOA). I do not think Honda designed their engines to run with 5% oil dilution.

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

I am sure tolerances specs have a range of oil viscosity that is acceptable, not a single number. It largely depends on the engine, some engines do not dilute oil with gas as others, for those thinner oil is fine. If you put Xw-30 and it comes out like Xw-20, you end up with the same grade...

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

The tighter tolerances theory does not make sense when the same engine in Mexico and other parts of the world listing BOTH 5w-30 and 0w-20 as acceptable viscosities.

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

You right, it does not mean that 0w-20 will cause harm. I am just operating on the side of caution

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

Yes, even if I am worried over nothing, I would still prefer to go with thicker oil to mitigate the effects of fuel dilution that drops viscosity by 2+ cSt. Besides, I dug up the owner manual for the same 2020 Acura RDX in Mexico, and see 5w-30 listed there as one of the acceptable choices.

Is the recommended 0-20 bad for engine life?

My the fuel dilution in my Acura RDX reduces viscosity by 2 or more cSt in 0w-20. The Xw-30 is needed just to keep oil in grade of 0w-20.

With oil so advanced now, can freshly built engines be broken in with synthetic?

I have generator and manual recommends not to use synthetic oil for initial break in. I know its not relevant, but it is interesting why

    Fresh Oil filter Every time?

Lol, thats one of the reasons for past 15 years I do DIY, its rolling a dice when you have your oil changed by dealer. Would not surprise me that some dishonest dealers will charge you for a filter but then one of the techs will say “screw it, I can finish this job faster”

    Fresh Oil filter Every time?

Isnt there some amount that stays in the engine anyway even with filter change? +/- small amount that filter holds might not be significant to make a difference.

    Fresh Oil filter Every time?

Car dealers are known for pushing unnecessary services and more frequent maintenance intervals, its good for their bottom line, so there is obviously a conflict of interest in anything they "recommend" vs what you actually need. Changing oil filter with every oil change is harmless, but...

    Pennzoil Platinum - 15k mile or 1yr

Did they actually change formulation, or only changed the label? Interesting that PUP does not have the same "15K" miles

    Fresh Oil filter Every time?

Honda or Acura dealer will change filter every time they change oil. What are you trying to imply?

    Fresh Oil filter Every time?

honda still recommends changing oil filter every other time you change oil.

What 0w16 are you using in your newer toyota?

Correct, but viscosity is recommended and not specified.
