How much extra viscosity does 5w40 buy you over 0w20 in the 250-290 degree range?

So I track my car and I notice that (very generally, due to different atmospheric, tire, and overall conditions never being the exact same two sessions in a row, much less two different days separated by weeks), when I run a thicker oil, my oil temps are higher. Which begs the question, is...

ATF for Road Racing/Track days in GT86

So I know the first question you guys are going to ask and that's why race an auto trans? The answer is because I originally bought it as a daily driver and my right shoulder is arthritic, so the paddle shifters come in handy. Now on to the problem: I just hit 36k miles and about 15 track days...

Questions about the process(es) of changing automatic transmission fluid

We've all seen the threads debating what kind of ATF to use. Can we talk about how to change it? As far as I can tell, there are at least two methods: Multiple partial drain/refills: the most common DIY method where you drain about a third of the transmission at a time, top it up, start the...

LubeGard Purple (PS additive) plus ATF on a Honda

So it says on the bottle that it turns any PS fluid into Honda PS fluid. Well we all know that Dexron III is excellent PS fluid..so it should turn ATF into Honda PS fluid, right? Well, we'll find out. Cos I flushed the PS system on my CR-V with ATF and topped it up with a bottle and a quarter...

So we know gear oil can't be used in the crankcase

...for reasons discussed in gruesome detail in this forum. However, I am curious if the converse is also true? For example, say you took a PCMO or even HDEO and maybe put an additive in there, or just be crazy and add a dollop of EP grease to the mix. What would happen if you put something...

Rear diff oil for a 1988 Mercedes 420SEL?

Hi all. Just lucked into this beaut and the manual simply states "Hypoid gear oil SAE90, 85W90." It's the same manual as for the 560 SEL and SEC, and for those cars the rear diff oil is "Hypoid gear oil SAE 90 for limited slip differential" So I think it's safe to assume that the limited slip...

"Not worth the bullet to kill"

I just got a call from some independent marketing firm asking about my recent contact with the "Toyota Customer Experience." At first I said just put down the absolute minimum possible score for each question. That didn't fly and after the opening questions (the guy was following a script) he...

service writers lie and pretend to know stuff

I used to be a mechanic. Big deal. Sometimes there's a problem or a job that exceeds my capacity at my house, and it has to be done by someone else. In the dealership the mechanics (aka "technicians") are insulated from the public (really the other way around probably) by a layer of scum called...

    Toyota sludge warranty--successful claims?

My 2000 Camry with a V6 1MZ-FE had a sudden catastrophic oil seal failure in one of the cylinders. I posted about it here . Under the valve cover, there is some varnish, looks about average to me for a well maintained engine. I've been running GC for the past year or so. So it's surprisingly...

Oil puddling in two cylinders of Toyota V6

2000 Camry, 1MZ-FE six cylinder, 90,000 miles. I gave it an oil change a few days ago, nothing unusual. Old oil maybe a bit dirty, but I run Castrol Syntec 0w30 so it's good oil. So I was pulling out of a driveway and speeding up to cross three lanes of traffic and make a quick U-turn. It was...

Not sure where this should go, but interesting

So this product basically reduces wear on the oil to ~0%, it's pretty groundbreaking. http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=8

    Camry Brake Hydraulics Woes

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry with about 80,000 miles. My mother bought it new. The brake pedal has never felt as firm as most cars, as far as I know/can tell. She's had a couple cars like this so I don't know exactly where/how the problem originated. When I got the car at 65k the brake pedal felt...

How do you guys sample your oil between changes?

My ideal way would be to have some sort of valve plumbed into the pressure side of the oiling system, and I could turn the engine on, make sure it was fully warmed up, and just slightly open this valve enough to fill pu the cup and then reseal the valve. Have any of you guys done this?

What 0w- oils are there out there?

What 0 weight oils are out there for easy consumption? I don't regularly see it. When I have seen it, it seems that it was Mobil 1 0w40, Mobil1 0w20, and Castrol Syntec 0w30 (aka German Castrol or GC). I really like the idea of a 0w oil for better pupability at startup, and I would like to see...

ANyone ever installed an oil pressure gauge on a Toyota?

I would like to mount an auxiliary oil pressure gauge. I knew that there are cheap kits available, but I would like some advice about where to look for likely ports into the oil system. Thanks

Is there a FAQ about GC somewhere?

I've used the search function and of course seen the two stickies at the top of the forum. I've gathered so far that the numbers on the bottom of the bottles indicate the year they were made, and that the older stuff is greenish, and at some point in the past they switched to brown/gold. Is...

    Lubegard Red AND/OR Lube Control?

Guys, I sincerely believe that Lubegard is the best stuff you can add to an automatic transmission. My question is, how does it compare to Lube Control? I would imagine the LG is the preferred product since it's designed JUST for trannies. However would they complement each other?
