Aren’t the foaming requirements per ASTM D6082 nearly identical between gasoline and diesel oils with an API license? In fact isn’t the diesel one is a bit more stringent?

Why? For what benefit? Consider why ILSAC GF-6B exists first.

Only if you deny the physics of how an oil film works. One can argue over the degree and how significant it is but it’s still guaranteed.

No there isn’t. In fact mechanical shear of the VM is quite rare and is highly engine dependent. We’ve seen very few confirmed incidences here. Most all the time we see viscosity deviations due to fuel dilution.

If the system is a little low and has a sight glass then you don't need a gauge. And if it's completely empty then go by weight.

If that's it then it explains why I've never seen such a thing.

And as an answer to your post title, yes Maxlife is a suitable substitute per their PDS. Another alternative that's been discussed lately is Valvoline Extended Protection ATF which is also suitable for Mercon SP applications.

And detergents in oil don’t clean, so a darker oil would indicate more contaminates held in suspension that would possibly have become deposits. But as others have noted there are numerous reasons an oil will darken in use. It’s not definitive.

Seemed like a reasonable suggestion to me given the plethora of truly equivalent choices available at Walmart. But hey, thanks for checking in.

I’m not sure how much I’d care if I did care. As they note the range of allowable HT/HS values is constrained by the grade, and beyond that any ILSAC resource conserving grade will be at the low end. If a particular HT/HS is critical to someone’s choice then either purchase it from a blender...
